Broad Plain to host 'little world cup' for local schools

posted 9 Aug 2011 23:27 by Paul Bryant

Come Autumn, all eyes will be focussed on New Zealand 2011, where the big guns of rugby union will be slugging it out for the world title. Meanwhile, the live action will be taking place much closer to home, at St John's Lane, where Broad Plain will be hosting their very own Little World Cup for south Bristol schools' tag rugby teams.

The Club is working with Ashton Park School Sports Partnership to run a tag rugby league for year 5 & 6 kids, through September and October, to coincide with events on the other side of the world.

The after-school tournament will run over four Monday evenings, with schools assigned a country drawn out of the hat on the first meeting. The final will take place just 6 days before the real thing, however in our case a Tonga v Argentina final is a real possibility!

Planning for the event is taking place right now, and schools will receive an invite when the new school term starts.

Although the Little World Cup may lack the bone-crunching tackles of the much anticipated Antipodean showdown, we can expect plenty of pace, skill and competitive spirit, judging by schools' performances at recent Broad Plain tournaments.

Watch this space for future updates.

1st XV run away with the title!

posted 14 Apr 2011 23:29 by Paul Bryant

Many would say its nothing to be excited about, but this month Broad Plain RFC were crowned champions of gloucester 3 - an achievement worth celebrating seeing as the club have not won promotion from any league since 1994.

With a young side at the helm and an average age of just 23, 'The Plain' dominated the league with style.

Defeat is yet to befall the team so far, with maximum points gained from every game (even though Gloucester all blue's seem to believe differently).

551 points have been notched up so far by 'The Plain' which is also a great achievement, with two games left to play if a 100% victory record is secured it will be a feat that not even the mighty Hartpury College could manage.

Bags packed and Gloucester 2 on the horizon.

5th August 2011 - Schools in-reach coaching attracts new players

posted 3 Mar 2011 04:59 by Paul Bryant   [ updated 5 Aug 2011 00:07 ]

Broad Plain coaches have been busy delivering in-reach coaching to two south Bristol primary schools in June. Paul and Nick pitched up at Ilminster Avenue School, Knowle, to coach years 4, 5 and 6 following a request to help out with their national schools sports week activities. Each class received a 45 minute crash course in tag rugby, finishing in a couple of games. The kids were really enthusiastic - we hope this taster will encourage the school to start their own tag rugby team, and encourage the kids to try out with Broad Plain!

Emma Isaac, the school's sports co-ordinator, had this to say:

"Just want to say a massive thank you for the rugby sessions last week. I've had such positive feedback from all the children and staff and they have said they really enjoyed the activities. Many thanks Emma"

Marcel, Paul and Nick have also coached year 2 pupils at Headley Park School over four Friday afternoons, culminating in a 4-way tournament, narrowly won by 'Lightning Strike'. Coaches and kids alike had a great time, and the improvement in the kids' tag skills were noticeable over the 4 weeks. The year 2 kids are now well prepared to step up to the school's year 3/4 tag team in September, and carry on Headley Park's rich tradition of successful tag rugby teams.

The sessions coincided with the school's summer fair, where the Broad Plain recruiting display generated a lot of interest. Following conclusion of the in-reach programme, 3 of the year 2s showed up at Broad Plain for midweek training and really enjoyed themselves. Hopefully they will spread the word to their mates!

Headley Park's tag team coach Carol Morris, who co-ordinated the in-reach coaching, commented:

"From my point of view I feel that teamwork on the sports field can very often spill over into the classroom and this is an absolute life skill that prepares our children for future learning and employment. The competitve edge you introduced in week four was perfect timing as the children had been coached the fundamentals and then transferred them into a match situation. Well done you lot!"

Broad Plain coaches are looking forward to working in more primary schools after the summer holidays

Updates to our website

posted 2 Mar 2011 05:15 by Paul Bryant   [ updated 2 Mar 2011 05:21 ]

We are currently updating all of our web-based content to ensure consistency and the best use of resources.

This will mean that over the coming weeks and months we will consolidate our pitchero accounts into a single Broad Plain RFC site and upgrade our club web-site so that all content can be easily updated and accessed through the one portal.

There may be occasions when we have to take the web-sites down, however we will aim to reduce this to a minimum.
